Three Tips For Ensuring You Have A Great Visit With Your Loved One At A Retirement Home

Blog

When you go to visit a loved one in a retirement home, make sure you do everything you can to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. There are many times when someone living in a retirement home cannot get out and about as much as they would like because they do not have a car to drive or are simply not able to drive safely anymore. The following guide provides you with a few ways to make your next visit to a retirement home as enjoyable as possible.

Bring Great Food with You

Many retirement homes have cafeterias on the premises for residents to eat in when they are hungry. If you want to make your visit special, consider bringing your loved ones favorite dish with you for them to enjoy. You can talk and relax with your loved one while enjoying a delicious meal together. Be sure to take the time to consider their dietary limitations when choosing the meal you want to bring, though. Low sodium dishes are often ideal for elderly individuals because it will reduce the chances of them retaining water or having an interaction with the medication they take. Some medications elderly individuals take should not be taken with a lot of salt; choosing low sodium options is often the best choice.

Bring Games to Play

Playing board games can help your loved one to stay mentally strong and alert. You want to be sure that you chose a game that your loved one will actually want to play and enjoys. Be sure to being a different game every time you go to visit to ensure that you and your loved one can always look forward to the games you play together.

Bring Pictures and Memorabilia

Bring pictures and memorabilia from things that are going on outside of the retirement home. Bring pictures of children in the family, medals or trophies that have been won, or even artwork that your children have made to show to the person staying in the retirement home. It will allow them to know that they are still an important part of your family.

Be sure to visit your loved one on a regular basis to ensure he or she knows how special they are to you. Before coming to visit, you may want to call ahead and ask if there is anything that they need to ensure that they can be as comfortable as they can possibly be in the retirement home.

Recognizing Great Nursing Home Amenities

When I started looking for a care center for my mother, I decided that I needed to learn a little more about nursing home amenities. I wanted her to be in a safe, happy, fun place, but I didn't know what to look for. To make my search easier, I picked up a piece of paper and a pen and started calling different facilities. I made a list of all of the exciting, new features that places were offering, and then I showed the list to my mom. I let her decide where to stay and what she wanted to do. This blog is all about recognizing great nursing home amenities, so that you can keep the people that you love happy and content.
